Are you taking care of your face?

The first step to any amazing makeup application is taking care of the face underneath it! Having a flawless canvas to begin with will only make your job easier. Check out the 10 tips below to make it happen!

1. Cleanse It

Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser such as Cetaphil in the morning and at night. For the love of all that is good in the world, PLEASE take off your makeup before you go to sleep- your skin will thank you! And though I’m sure you’ve heard it 8000 times, fight the urge to pick at your face!

2. Tone It

The purpose of a toner is to restore the skin’s natural pH (acidity level). This is important in maintaining the ultra delicate balance of bacteria on the face. Stay away from toners containing alcohol as they are very drying- read your ingredient labels! Give witch hazel a try- it’s one of the best natural toners and it won’t break the bank.

3. Moisturize It

It’s so so sooo important to moisturize your skin. If your face dries out, oil production will increase to compensate and excess oil is never something we want on our faces! Makeup can also be very drying so be sure to moisturize before your application. I love Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentrate, it’s ultra moisturizing and I can usually use it in the place of a primer!

4. Exfoliate It

Exfoliation is a great way to obtain healthy, glowing skin. It helps to slough off dead skin cells and stimulate circulation in the face. Gently apply to a damp face in circular motions and rinse off with lukewarm water. Limit yourself to once or twice a week and try to choose a scrub specific for your skin type. I’m a diehard fan of the St. Ive’s Original Apricot Scrub!

5. Stay Hydrated

Water is a commonly underestimated factor in maintaining healthy skin. It helps your body process toxins at a quicker rate which in turn helps you keep a clear face. Try to drink 64oz of hydrating liquids each day (caffeinated drinks and alcohol don’t count!) 6. Protect It From the Sun

Nothing makes you look older than you are quicker than sun damage. Protect yourself with high levels of SPF at the beach and wear at least 15 SPF on the day to day. I used to hate wearing sunscreen all the time until I found Coola; their products are ultra light and have a light and refreshing scents!

7. Eat for Healthy Skin

It’s true, you are what you eat. Eat as many fresh fruits and vegetables as you can and do your best to avoid eating processed foods. Take care of your body!

8. Be Careful With Delicate Areas of the Face

Be gentle with the delicate tissue around your eyes, pulling and tugging leads to premature wrinkles! When removing makeup, use an awesome remover like Make Up For Ever’s Sens Eyes. Use the smooth side of a cotton round to gently wipe downwards on the lid and outwards underneath the eyes.

9. Sleep

They call it beauty sleep for a reason! Sleep allows your body to repair itself, if you don’t get enough of it your skin will suffer. Try to get 8-9 hours of sleep each night!

10. Exercise

Another commonly underestimated factor in skin health, exercise improves circulation and helps keep your skin glowing! It also boosts endorphins and like we learned from Legally Blonde, endorphins make us happy! :)
