What to Wear for Your Next Headshots

Updated: Mar 31, 2023

Don't know how to dress for your next professional headshots? I'm here to help!

One of the most important parts of capturing a great headshot is choosing the right wardrobe. Your outfit can say a lot about you and can help make the difference between a good headshot and an excellent one. But with so many clothing and accessory options to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. That's why I put together some useful tips and tricks for choosing the perfect outfit for your next headshot!

1. Consider the purpose of the headshot

Before you choose an outfit, think about the purpose of the headshot. Are you using it for a professional profile, a modeling portfolio, or an acting headshot? Who will be looking at your headshot and what do they want to see? Use your purpose to drive your wardrobe choices.

2. Keep it simple and timeless

When it comes to headshots, simple and timeless styles are often (but not always) the best choice. Avoid clothing with busy patterns, overly bright colors, or bold logos, as these can be distracting and take away from the focus on your face. Instead, opt for solid colors, neutral tones, and flattering fits.

3. Choose your colors wisely

There's a lot to be said about the importance of color theory. Every color is associated with specific moods and themes like yellow=energetic/happy and green=calm/collected. When choosing the colors for your headshot wardrobe/background, it can be helpful to use these color themes as a guide. It's also imperative to consider what colors best flatter the undertones of your skin.

4. Dress appropriately for your profession

If you're using your headshot for professional purposes, it's important to dress appropriately for your specific profession. For example, if you're a lawyer or executive, a tailored suit and tie may be appropriate. If you're a creative professional, such as an artist or graphic designer, a more relaxed, creative look may be a better fit. Either way, don't be afraid to let your personality shine!

5. Pay attention to detail

Finally, be mindful of the details of your outfit. Make sure your clothes are clean, pressed, and free of any wrinkles or stains. Be sure to check for any loose threads, missing buttons, etc. Your hair and makeup should be professionally done (click here for tips on finding an artist) but if you need to do it yourself, I've collected some great tips for you! In most cases, jewelry should be minimal and understated (think classic pieces). The goal is to look polished and professional, so it's important to pay attention to the details.

And there you have it! Picking the right outfit for your headshot is all about highlighting your best features and projecting the right image. Basic, solid-colored pieces can work wonders so don't be afraid to keep it simple. Consider what your audience wants to see and how your headshot can convey that. After reading through these helpful tips, I know you'll be ready for your close-up in no time at all. Happy posing!
